The Daily Grind

A publication of Pickwick Mill, Inc. A nonprofit organization dedicated to the requisition of the Pickwick Mill, restoration of the dam and the pond, and area flood control.

March 2005

Come to the Annual Meeting: April 4, 2005 at the Pickwick Fire House 7 P.M.

Please come, your input is very important, your vote for new officers and general discussion. We will have coffee and goodies.

Up for election are Gene Gunderson, Marian Vanderzee, Charles Smith, and Al Aspen.

Dean Suffrins and Opal Fitch are the only members of the original board of 1983 and still serving.

Your millboard consists of Opal Fitch, Dean Suffrins, Eldor Beach, Denny Allen, Gene Gunderson, Charles Smith, Virginia Laken, Thelvin Solem, Chris Johnson, Mike Anderson, Al Aspen, as well as Betty Lu Bierly who is appointed by WCHS.

Many of these have served many years, the expertise of Gene Gunderson and Eldor Beach (and sons) has served us well. Marian Vanderzee does one fantastic job as Treasurer. Chris Johnson has our Internet up and running. Every board member has their nitch and are very dedicated people, and we need each and every one of them.

We meet every first Monday of the month, at the Fitch home. These are public meetings and are open to all.

Our pond committee is working hard and has a really big job, and we need lots of money. Each agency has their do and don'ts and takes lots of expertise.

We are in need of Volunteers. Vick and Jane Gardner have put in countless hours and do a super job, but we need workers. A special thanks to Thelma Weiser who has given one day a week for several years, a few more like her and we would have it made!

Please do not use the excuse you are not knowledgeable about the mill. What a volunteer does is take admission fees, show them the film, and then give them a self-guided paper, and they are allowed to go any place in the mill. After which, you hope to sell them something from the gift shop such as pictures, stone ground flour, cups, shirts, etc. All are priced.

Of course, one of our biggest attractions is the water wheel, which runs when the mill is open. Visitors walk out on a platform over the water wheel, which has a very beautiful view.

Remember, our folks built this 4 by 20 foot water wheel from scratch, great job!

Remember, even a couple hours’ help out a lot, whatever you can give. We are open 10:00 A.M. to 5 P.M. daily, Sundays 11:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. and closed on Monday's.

If you are able to volunteer, please call Vick Gardner at (507) 457-3296.

The Pickwick Mill book printed last September has been completely sold out. However, there will be a reprinting in March, so they can be picked up at the Mill for $18.50 plus tax; for a total of $19.70. Alternatively, we will mail it to you for $25.00. There are lots of pictures and history inside this book. If you would like to have one mailed, please send a check for $25.00 to the mill and include a note requesting a copy and your mailing address.

All Mill Membership Dues are now due; unless you are a life member.

See you at the Annual Meeting.

Your daily grinder,

Opal Fitch
