The Daily Grind

A publication of Pickwick Mill, Inc. A nonprofit organization dedicated to the requisition of the Pickwick Mill, restoration of the dam and the pond, and area flood control.

October 2004

Pickwick Mill day was a great success; the weather was perfect for a good turn out, great entertainment, and lots of good food. The day started out with the road run walk, then Shadow's famous pancakes with Lila's great blackberry syrup, what a treat, only in Pickwick Valley! Pete's brats, hotdogs, pie, ice cream, and a bake sale. This followed with a rib dinner.

At 10:00 am, 12 men in full uniform from the La Crescent American Legion, raised the American flag in commemoration of 9/11 at the mill, lowered it halfway, played the national anthem, and taps; very impressive. Following this the Millboard presented Victor and Jane Gardner a plaque in appreciation of their hard work, Thank You!

Up at the mill, the machinery ran three times during the day, Gordon McMaster played the musical saw, and Gary Fort tended a forge while his wife spun. There were lots of flea markets also.

Down at the fire station, entertainment started off with Pastor Riediger on the banjo, followed by the La Crosse Cloggers, and then Blue Grass Music, and the Grannies. There was a silent auction as well as a live auction, bingo, and duck soup ball game.

We again sold raffle tickets on a 2004 Chevy truck and Guns. Our old standby, Gordon Nagle, was not with us and was missed. He was such a great ticket salesman! This year we were unable to sell 8 truck tickets and 31 gun tickets. The gambling board would not allow us to do the bobber race. This year’s raffle winners are:

  • Truck: Betty & Fred Parpart
  • $1,000.00 Ron Zinda
  • $700.00 Tony Blummentritt
  • $500.00 Nick Baumgartner
  • $200.00 Gerald Noeska
  • Gun Winners: Norm Nelson, Charlie Mayer, Tim Larson, Bill Kortsch, Tim Witt, Gary Buehler, and Darrel Reutzel.
  • Many $1.00 winners
  • $100.00 Rose Weideman
  • $50.00 First Place Trophies of Winona
  • $25.00 Allen Tarras
  • $25.00 Lois Davis

We thank all of you who supported us!

The committee is working on trying to cut the red tape for dredging the pond, plus we need more money. The Winona Foundation has been very generous to us and we greatly appreciate their help! So, if you know of a grant or need a tax write-off, let us know.

Pickwick (the township) was 150 this year, and we printed a book to document the history of the Pickwick area. The book sells for $18.50 plus $1.20 tax at the mill. If you would like to obtain a copy, send a request along with $25.00 (to cover the cost of the book, tax, and shipping) and we will send one to you.

A special thank you to all the hard work, donations, and talents! Thank You!

Your daily grinder,

Opal Fitch
